There are days when I cannot discover a reason to be – a purpose in God’s design, a direction or path to follow. There in those rare quiet moments in the middle of the adventure where God has placed my footsteps, I must be still. Perhaps I am feeling far from God and need to simply pause, seek a quiet place, and in the silence, rekindle that fire in my heart. I need time to commune with God. I need to examine my basic philosophy of life and determine if it is in agreement with the prophet Jeremiah. He says before I was born God knew me. On days when I feel worthless, alone, and undeserving of God’s love…I ask God to show me His purpose and the plan He had when He created me.
Philosophy of Life
Many years ago my younger sister and I were driving along Kings Highway, a street in Florida City, Florida. Both of us burst into song at the same time. We sang out the lyrics of a song by that title, “Walking Down the King’s Highway.” I saw a street sign recently and it reminded me of that event. I am walking through life on the King’s Highway, which brings me to thoughts regarding my basic philosophy of life. All of us operate under some sort of philosophy whether or not we give it much thought. Here’s mine.
I Am Nothing
On my own, I am nothing, if I am anything.
I am a nobody among all the somebody’s.
I am content with all my discontentedness.
I am at peace.
It’s an okay place to be because I’ve nothing to prove, nothing to long for, nothing to live up to, nothing to dread, and nothing to lose.
He is Everything
In Christ, I find joy in my nothingness – God becomes my everything.
In my anonymity – God calls me His child.
In my discontentedness – I understand that this time on earth is merely temporary.
I’ve nothing to prove because Jesus proved it all at Calvary.
I’ve nothing to long for, for Christ is my all in all, my everything.
I’ve nothing to live up to, “for I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20-21).
I’ve nothing to dread because Jesus paid the price for my sin and has blotted out all my transgressions.
I’ve nothing to lose, “for to me to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
I Am A Child of the King
God knew me before I was. He knew who I’d be, and the number of days of my life (Psalm 139:16).
I became His by adoption, and may call God, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). Everything that is His, is mine. For the Bible states that “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-18).
I will remain His because John writes in the gospel, “And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (John 10:28).
I will return to Him upon my death because He has promised that He is preparing a place for me in my Father’s house where eye hasn’t seen, nor can we imagine the beauty He’s prepared.
I am EVERYTHING in my nothingness.
I am SOMEBODY because there are no nobody’s.
I am discontent with my contentedness because there are masses around me who do not know what I know.
And the peace I have is not from sources of this world because I have a peace that passes all understanding, for the Lord HIMSELF has given me peace.
Have You Discovered Your Philosophy of Life?
Along our journey of Volunteer Missions, we have met many people who are struggling with some of these issues I have mentioned. If you are among them, my prayer is that you’ll find in Christ, the answers to your need. He is always ready to meet with you when you seek Him with your whole heart.
Let me know if I can be of any assistance on your spiritual journey.
