Recently an article featuring Becky Mann, appeared in the Southeast Outlook, a church newspaper in Louisville, Kentucky. She was sharing her faith and journey, and mentioned her mother’s name. Immediately I was curious to read more. Becky is the daughter of Helen Frazee-Bower, poet and author of the story, “God’s Trees.” This little story was a large part of my childhood in Alabama. My mother read it to us until we could recite it along with her. The truths of this simple, straight-forward story have been a part of the spiritual building blocks all my life. Even today, words from the story will find their way into my conversation. Here are several lessons from God’s Trees.
Lessons from God’s Trees
I am thankful that my mother read this little story into our hearts…this story chock full of hope. I’ve often wondered what appealed to her so much about that little story. Perhaps it was the hope she discovered personally. Hope to get her through some desperate situations when she was trying to clothe and feed us with dad’s meager salaries, and personality.
Eternal Lessons for the Darkest Hours
Whatever the reason, I am forever grateful for the concepts of God’s Trees. The lesson of this story taught me eternal lessons that I have treasured in some of my darkest hours. None of the trees dreams came to pass as they had anticipated, but in God’s divine wisdom, and knowledge, what they saw as tragedies, became great and abundant blessings. Each of mom’s four little trees has experienced some pretty deep valleys and heartaches through the years, but God has always been faithful to see us through to the other side.
God Walks IN the Fire With Us
An evangelist recently spoke of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego being in the fire. Jesus wasn’t only able to redeem them FROM the fire….He was IN the fire with them. Remember the truth that whatever fire you may be walking through, God is walking around in there WITH you. Claim this promise and just know He will not sleep nor slumber while you’re in this situation.
Simple Little Story Can Influence For Life
Today, if you are bowed down under the weight of some situation or trial, take comfort and encouragement. You are not walking through this deep valley alone. Perhaps the world has made an assessment of you that you are “no good” or “bad, and worthless” – that is a lie. It is NOT God’s assessment. If you’re experiencing what seems to be an impossible situation, remember, “God who loves little trees says ‘wait’ and I’ll show you something.” And He will.
Those simple little words have continually whispered God’s truths into my heart throughout my life. They have pointed me back to a child-like trust in God-sized truth.
How about you today? Do you need to hear the simplicity of the message, “wait, and I’ll show you something.”?
There are many variations of this simple story. If you are unfamiliar with God’s Trees, I invite you to enjoy the basic story in the following video. The difference with this version and the one I grew up hearing is slight. When each of the trees did not see their dreams coming to pass, God whispered to them, “Wait, and I’ll show you something”. My mother always waited until we were holding our breath, and then she would say, “And He did!” This is the lesson I carry in my heart when things aren’t going so well. Wait, God will show you something – and He ALWAYS does!
